How Did We Get Here? A FAA NextGen Backstory.

The long path from the FAA’s initial plans for airspace modernization to the current implementation of FAA’s NextGen that is torturing hundreds of thousands of Americans around the country is not surprisingly one of best intentions undercut by greed, incompetence, and deception.

While it’s easy to point all the fingers directly at the FAA, the history of FAA’s NextGen shows the airlines played a very significant role in convincing the FAA to abandon its original plans for broad airspace modernization, and instead focus on efforts that would directly contribute to the airlines balance sheet.

FAA NextGen And The 2012 To 2015 "Optimization Of Metroplex Airspace"

In 2016, a Palo Alto, CA resident wrote an extensive history detailing exactly how the FAA's NextGen came about. The paper, FAA NextGen And The 2012 To 2015 "Optimization Of Metroplex Airspace" (referenced as FN2012-2015 in below excerpts) details the often closed door process that resulted in NextGen. From its origins as RTCA Task Force 5 to the OAPM public comment process, the paper laid out exactly how the airlines and the FAA went about operating in secrecy to ensure that the airlines could get exactly the results they wanted, without having to deal with the general public.
