Media Coverage Of FAA’s NextGen Air And Noise Pollution
Since the implementation of NextGen, there’s been a steady escalation of media coverage of the problems created by NextGen.
As the FAA continues to expand NextGen across the country with little or no concern for the hundreds of thousands of citizens being impacted by air and noise pollution, the amount of media coverage of the problem continues to grow. While it would be a full-time job requiring a team to fully digest all the media coverage of NextGen problems, below is a list of recent coverage highlighting NextGen problems.
FAA Study Finds Noise From Airplanes, Helicopters More Annoying Than Other Sources
“The FAA’s Neighborhood Environmental Survey tells us what we already knew loud and clear: Our communities are ravaged by aircraft noise,” said Rep. Thomas Suozzi (D-N.Y.), a vice chair of the Quiet Skies Caucus.

DC Attorney General Urges FAA To Change Airport Noise Policy
Attorney General Karl Racine also said the FAA didn’t apply its noise policy consistently and fairly when rerouting flights to and from Reagan National Airport in 2015, leading to an increase in noise near the airport.

Congressional Quiet Skies Caucus Sends Letter To President-elect Biden and Incoming Secretary of Transportation Buttigieg About New FAA Appointees And Fixing FAA NextGen
“We represent Americans from diverse locales across the country, united by grave concern over the toll that noise can take on the people living with a constant drone of aircraft. Planes fly low or late at night, near homes and schools; flights arrive and depart within minutes of each other; and the FAA’s NextGen project has concentrated flight paths without consideration of the people below. As a result of these policies, millions of Americans suffer from sleep disruption; exacerbation of high blood pressure and other chronic diseases; learning loss in schools; and economic losses to businesses ranging from tourism to technology to entertainment.
For decades the agency has consistently downplayed and overlooked the toll of noise disruption on human lives and communities. The NextGen project to update the technology used to control air traffic has brought foreseeable problems that could have been headed off if the agency, early in its planning stages, had considered what happens on the ground as well as what happens in the skies and included in the process business owners, local elected officials, airport noise roundtables, health advocates, and others likely to be affected.”

Over 27 Members of Congress Send The FAA A Letter Criticizing the FAA’s Noise Evaluation Study As Deeply-Flawed and Inadequate
“In the letter to the FAA sent on Sept. 23, the members of Congress said the report was “wholly inadequate” and failed to meet the mandates of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018.”
“Section 188 of the reauthorization act required the FAA to “evaluate alternative metrics to the current average day-night level standard, such as the use of actual noise sampling and other methods, to address airplane noise concerns.” The FAA was also required to release a report on its findings. The lawmakers said the report fails to seriously analyze and consider those alternative metrics.“
“The FAA’s report is unacceptable,” said Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA). “The FAA failed to meet its mandate because it didn’t evaluate alternative noise metrics, standing by standards that don’t fully capture noise impacts. The FAA must go back to the drawing board and write a new report. In the meantime, I expect detailed responses to the questions raised by our constituents in this letter, and I know my colleagues want answers, too.”
Local Officials Want More Time From FAA To Comment On Hollywood Burbank Airport Project
“The FAA’s extension falls far short of what would be an appropriate amount of time for a project of this magnitude,” Krekorian said. “Regrettably, the FAA has again missed an opportunity to demonstrate good faith to the people of the San Fernando Valley who suffer the consequences of the agency’s decisions.”

“As a senior member of the Aviation Subcommittee of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and Co-Chair of the Quiet Skies Caucus, I have been deeply involved with the implementation of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). I appreciate the Government Accountability Office (GAO) agreeing to study how the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has considered community noise impacts while implementing NextGen in major metropolitan areas. I write to include Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in this upcoming study. “
FAA Announces Millions In New Airport Funding For Maryland And Virginia
At BWI, the new funding will support noise mitigation efforts. The airport is getting $665,000 to purchase land in the airport’s noise zone. The airport, located in Anne Arundel County, has seen a wave of complaints from neighbors over airplane noise since flight patterns were shifted as part of the FAA’s NextGen initiative.

Letters To The Editor: Denton, Texas
“There is also a massive influx of airplane noise as well as a result of flight path changes under the FAA’s NextGen program. As I write, airplanes roar overhead every few minutes. I wear earmuffs inside my own home much of the time. When residents are having to wear noise-cancelling headphones and earmuffs in their own homes, when for years there were no issues, something has been terribly mismanaged.”
