Despite several years going by and several promises made by the FAA to “work with” communities to alleviate the incredible air and noise pollution created by FAA NextGen, the FAA has made no changes and done little to solve the problem. If anything, it increasingly feels like the FAA is retreating even further into ensuring that the airlines are insulated from the repercussions of FAA NextGen by trying to assure legislators and regulators that NextGen is first and foremost about safety, and that nothing can be changed because it would compromise safety.

In a recent letter from Congress to the FAA, Members of Congress pointed out that the FAA did not even have a metric to establish the “safety” of NextGen. Additionally, at the time FAA NextGen was conceived, the United States was enjoying one of the strongest aviation safety records in the developed world. How could the FAA have gotten tens of billions of dollars for NextGen on the pretext of safety, when U.S. skies at that time were already among the safest in the world?

It’s become increasingly clear that the primary motivation of NextGen appears to be about the airlines saving money on fuel (at least as it’s being implemented – this is not what FAA NextGen was originally conceived for).
